This beautiful antique plate featuring magnolia flower and leaves dates from around 1900 during the Art Nouveau period, made in Germany by Villeroy & Boch. It is stamped VBS to the bottom. Taking inspiration from the unruly aspects of the natural world, Art Nouveau influenced art and architecture especially in the applied arts, graphic work, and illustration.
Majolica is a kind of earthenware that has been fired to the biscuit stage. Then the raised decoration is painted on with metal-oxide glazes. After that, the piece is fired again. This last firing gives a glossy finish to the glaze.
There are a few very small chips to the rim of the plate, commensurate with age. These in no way detract from the beauty of this rare piece.
