A tall, pear-shaped jug in grey stoneware, painted all over with flowers. Cobalt-blue blossoms with coral-red centres are scattered across the neck, and lower down, large white acanthus leaves sweep up from the foot as though they're caught in the wind. Small green leaves and fine gilt details are tucked in between.
The rim is banded in deep blue with a gilt scalloped border just below it. The handle is shaped with a scroll at the top and picked out in gold. The painting is raised slightly from the surface, so you can feel each petal. The grey body shows through everywhere else, which keeps it from being too sweet.
It's a jug for a mantelpiece or the middle of a table. Anything you put in it should be simple: a few white tulips, some branches of blossom, or nothing at all.
Hand wash only. Please don't put it in the dishwasher, because of the gilding.
Signed with an incised mark to the base, possibly German 1910.
